“Rent” is a contemporary rock musical that follows the lives of a group of struggling artists and musicians living in New York City’s East Village during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the late 1980s. The story revolves around Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, and his roommate Roger, a musician who is grappling with the loss of his girlfriend to AIDS. They navigate their tumultuous relationships and confront issues of love, loss, addiction, and acceptance while striving to pursue their artistic dreams despite the harsh realities of poverty and illness.
